Abstract:

Part of the project will involve various methods of restricting the parameter space of the axion models. Dr. Andrei T. Patrascu will work on the novel connection relating quantum information and high energy physics based on a model he developed and published (Phys. Lett. B 786, 1, 2018). The main idea is to notice that topological correction to the axion mass has a significant impact on the mass adding new restrictions and therefore narrowing the search window. Such topological corrections are seen as instantons in quantum field theory and in gravity. Due to the ER-EPR duality, such terms can be represented in terms of quantum information gates and hence the entanglement structure of the theory becomes important. This leads us to study, by means of the Ryu Takayanagi conjecture but also by means of a Replica Trick approach, the entanglement entropy in theories closely related to those consisting of axion fields in topologically nontrivial spacetime geometries. The work of Andrei Patrascu will be linked to new ways of studying beyond the standard model effects that will contribute to the axion mass, particularly those that can be related to quantum information. On the more conservative side, he will establish the computational framework for the standard axion production cross-sections and the quantum field theoretical calculations necessary for that. The observation that quantum information plays an essential role in beyond standard model physics and in particular in high energy physics has been discussed by A. T. Patrascu in his articles J. High En. Phys. 2017, 46 (2017) and J. High En. Phys. 2017, 74 (2017), where the role of entanglement is described in relation to wormhole geometries and the ER-EPR conjecture is proved (completely at least in one direction) via the Mayer Vietoris theorem. This work will lead to the field of the holographic principle and the calculation of entanglement entropy for boundary conformal field theories as well as potential extensions thereof and the study of nontrivial topologies inside the bulk space, for example, the construction of bulk AdS Wormhole geometries. All these clearly beyond standard model contributions will be focused on the determination of axion masses and on the masses of other dark matter candidates.

Another part of the project will be directly devoted to the theoretical investigation of dark matter particle detection in intense laser fields. Important candidates for dark matter particles are axions, axion-like particles (ALPs), and Majorana particles, which possess only toroidal moments. Such particles interact with intense electric and magnetic fields, generating photons, which then may be detected. It is interesting to note that while electric and magnetic dipoles interact in general with the electromagnetic fields, toroidal moments interact only with currents and displacement currents (i.e., the time variation of the electric field). Therefore, the laser fields, providing intense time-varying electric and magnetic fields, are perfect candidates for the detection of (particles with only) toroidal moments or toroidal polarizability. Besides the study of the interaction of dark matter particles with the laser fields and the analysis of the detection possibilities, we shall also analyze the mathematical properties of the toroidal moments and of the toroidal momentum operator (see D. V. Anghel, J. Phys. A 30, 3515, 1997). This will enable us to find more subtle properties of such particles and, eventually, specific quantization conditions—but this would be one of the high risk-high reward aspects of the project.

 1. On the quantum properties of the toroidal moments.

In 1957, Zeldovich introduced a new type of electromagnetic interaction, in order to explain the parity nonconservation in β-decays [1]. Since neither electric nor magnetic multipoles lead to an interaction of that type, he introduced for the first time the notion of "anapole", a type of distribution that he intuitively described as a toroidal solenoid (a wire solenoid curved into a torus). In the context of classical electrodynamics, Dubovik and Cheshkov proposed in the late 1960s that a whole new multipole family has to be introduced to complement the electric and magnetic moments and they reached the conclusion that a dynamic nonradiating anapole can only be achieved if toroidal moments are taken into consideration [2,3]. Because it is difficult to isolate this weak radiative correction experimentally, the anapole moment was measured in atomic Cesium only decades after its theoretical prediction [4]. Although overlooked for a long time, it has been realized that the toroidal moments and anapole configurations emerged as an important tool to describe the properties of systems at all scales, from particle physics to the physics of macroscopic systems and this new field expanded rapidly [5,6]

One of the most intriguing theoretical discoveries in this field was that particles that may be good candidates for dark matter constituents can only have toroidal moments and also the CPT invariance requires that the electromagnetic structure of Majorana fermions consists only of toroidal moments [7,8,9]. If the toroidal moment corresponds to a quantum observable, the operator should be self-adjoint. In a previous article [10], we have shown that the operator is hypermaximal (it admits several self-adjoint extensions) and a complete set of eigenfunctions was found. Our objective is to investigate this problem further, since, if some particles have intrinsic toroidal moments, we should know what values these moments can have and if they are precisely determined. We shall study the quantum properties of the toroidal momentum operator, like self-adjointness, commutators, spectrum, etc. and extend this treatment to the second quantization formalism since we should see how we can describe such particles in a consistent many-body formalism.

Throughout the first submitted article, we analyzed the quantum operator which corresponds to the projection of the toroidal moment onto the z axis, using two ”natural sets of coordinates" which brings the operator to a simpler form. These transformations between coordinates enable us to express all the familiar operators, like position, momenta, and the Hamiltonian in terms of operators in the natural coordinates of the toroidal moment operator. The formalism presented here allows one to find any number of operators commuting to the aforementioned operator (and commuting with each-other) and to form complete sets of compatible observables, with complete orthonormal sets of eigenfunctions. Although the general expressions are complicated, in specific, physically relevant cases, they may be substantially simplified (one such case is when the quantum particle exists in a thin torus). We have analyzed the toroidal moment operator along the z-axis on a family of torus-like surfaces and we have proven its self-adjointness. We further studied the particular case o a simple torus-shaped surface and we found numerically the stationary states.

2. On the calculation of the dark matter parameter corrections from quantum information

Since the project started, we studied the methods through which beyond standard model parameters can be described using methodology originating in quantum information theory. In order to advance with this study, we analyzed the phase structure of certain systems described by non-abelian gauge theories. Particularly we have studied single and double trace operators of which we know they determine the wormhole geometry (spacetime geometry with non-trivial topology). Until now we tried to analyze these operators from the perspective of string-gauge duality. According to the idea mentioned in Refs. [1,2] (but also [3]), if we analyze from the perspective of a gauge theory on the lattice in the limit of strong coupling, the elementary excitations arise in the form of closed strings made of color-electric fluxes. In the presence of quarks, these closed strings open and their ends are fixed on quarks, a phenomenon participating in the understanding of confinement. In SU(N) gauge theories the interaction between strings in the high N limit is weak. This suggests that in the continuum limit the best description of the gauge theory will imply flux lines (strings) and not fields. We, therefore, expect for the general case situation that an exact duality will arise between strings and gauge theories. The other way around, superstrings can be seen as flux lines of a universal unknown gauge theory. From this perspective, we can see spacetime as an emerging structure in a quasi-classical limit of a certain abstract gauge theory without a clear spacetime dependence. Our observables will be sets of gauge invariant operators formed from products of elementary operators. To find a dynamical connection between strings and such operators (words, in the denomination of [1]) is a fundamental problem of the string-gauge duality which led us via a set of limit cases to the open-closed string duality and to AdS/CFT.

In these few months, Andrei Patrascu wrote an article [7] in which he presented how to construct in general a precursor (non-local) operator using local bulk operators. The main idea is based on a problem that became a reference for neural network experiments [4], namely the so called “hat problem” or “coordinated inference problem”. This is an interesting mathematical problem that wishes the development of a guessing prescription for certain colors without any direct information upon them and with only a limited one-directional signaling method. This problem has an interesting application in the situation described in [6] which implies a pre-arrangement of observers in the bulk space although it does not state precisely how such a pre-arrangement is obtained. It seems that the problem must include an optimization technique that takes as input an entanglement structure and produces non-local operators associated with local bulk observables, capable of predicting (inferring) the bulk structure before it can reach the bulk in a causal manner. This procedure is based on neural networks and can be used to find new possible string-gauge dualities. This is particularly important as it allows the optimization of a field theory from an entanglement structure and can lead to entanglement gates specific to quantum information tools that determine the parameters of a field theory beyond the standard model.

A 30, 3515, 1997 ).

Calcularea corecțiilor parametrilor materiei intunecate, folosind informatia cuantica
