Recent measurements of the CMB confirm predictions of a period of inflation in the primordial Universe. We will give a pedagogical outline of the observational evidence and theoretical motivations for this phenomenon. Moreover, we will argue for a class of inflationary models that can be characterized in terms of geometry rather than potential energy, and close with their predictions for future observations.
